The blue field is actually on the flag's right (imagine if you were the flag and looking out.) The right is the position of honor so the field must go to the right. Now in the case of when the flag is worn on the uniform the flag must be worn on the soldier's right side however, another rule comes into play here. The field also has to be facing foward so the flag appears backwards. We used to wear it on the left side with the field facing foward as well however, someone decided a few years ago to switch it to the right side. No one way is 100% correct however, wearing it on the right side is "more correct."

Well, actually, they arent always on the left. The rule is that its always supposed to look like its on a pole charging forward, never retreating. Because the pole attatches to the side with the stars, the side with the stars always has to be in front, so it looks like its moving forward. In most cases, the front is considered to be the left, as we read from left to right in this country. However, if you look at the flag on Army uniforms, the blue is on the right. Thats because its on the right sleeve, and its got to look like its moving in the same direction as the Soldier is facing.

It's the way our flag is formatted, and it how it's supposed to be displayed. there is no real reason.
Military wears theirs always advancing, with the union to the right as that's the part that is attached to the flagpole. They are the only ones allowed to do that though.

That's what the US flag code says you should do. It would look like crap if everyone hung their flags any which way that suited them.

I didn't think there was a "reason", it's just the decision on what is proper.
