well i dont know about nowadays but i went in in 1988 and was in class M (mike) 127. its physical but not to the point where it will kill you. alot of it is mental. knot tying, drill, seamanship you only have weapons training for 2 weeks, firefighting training for 1 week, and you learn the history of the coast guard. and there will be written and first person tests so pay attention. you will be up at 5 am everyday. you will get an on base leave for 2 days in week 7 and off base for 2 days on week 8. remember also that the first and last thing out of your mouth when you talk to you company commander(drill instructor) is SIR or MA'AM. and always adress them by rank also. you will learn to call everyday things in nautical terms. a wall is a bulkhead, ceiling an overhead, those kind of things. the best advice i can give you is to listen and practice. and do not leave your locker unlocked or you will dearly pay physically! any other questions for you and i can give you my best knowkedge but i'm sure alot has changed in almost 20 years. i was in coast guard from 1988-92 then u.s. army from 95-present will retire finally in a few years. start running and doing exercises now before you get cramped muscles and are in pain

Oh, you know, I hear its the second hardest after Marine Basic, but I've only heard rumors. When I was in Advanced Individual Training it was joint but there was only one Coastie in our class. She said that her Basic was hard but she wouldn't know if it was any better or worse than any other because she hadn't been through another. She was placed in the Marine Barracks, though, and we all speculated that it was because the rumors about Coast Guard Basic were true, and that being said, she wouldn't fit in very well in the Navy Barracks. Good luck though, if I were to pick another branch, it would be Coast Guard!
