Lutherans are Protestant Christians.

OK. Here is the longer answer. Let's start out by saying that Christians include anyone who believes that Christ is the Son of God and died on cross for the salvation of humanity. So, Christians include all sorts of groups, including the Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Protestant churches. There are also many Protestant churches, which include Lutherans, Episcopalians, Baptists, Congregationalists, Pentecostals, and a number of Evangelical churches.

Martin Luther is the man whom the Lutherans are named after and he lived about 500 years ago. Martin Luther began his life as a Catholic monk. While he was a monk there was a lot of turmoil within the Catholic Church. Many people, including Martin Luther, deeply loved the Catholic Church, but thought that it was too rich and too corrupt. Luther wanted to reform the Catholic Church, but he was not able to do so. Eventually he decided that his only choice was to leave the church. Luther and his friends began what is called the Reformation, and this led to the formation of many Protestant churches, some of which I mentioned above.

If you want to know more, feel free to ask.

Since I first posted, a couple of people have written some things which should be clarified. First, persecution after the Reformation went both ways as English history attests. This is not to say that persecution from any side was right or justified, but rather that no side gets off easy. Also, the "inventors" of Christianity were Jews, not Catholics, which I hope would be a reminder that we should try to be tolerant of others on this message board and hopefully in life. It is possible to believe strongly in your own beliefs without disparaging those of others.

I believe the Lutheran Church is a Christian denomination. There are several Christian denominations that don't hold all beliefs in common, but they all do believe that Jesus is the only begotten son of God, born of a virgin, crucified and raised from the dead to save us from our sins. After that they vary. Some believe in the gifts of the Spirit, some don't. Some believe in healing, some don't. Those are just examples. If you want to find out about different Christian religions you can usually google each one and find a web page that has their creed or statement of beliefs.

Here's a link to Wikipedia's article about the Lutherans and what they believe.

Lutherans are Christians who have attended a 17-week confirmation class to learn about the teachings of a well known Christian, Martin Luther.
Another name for Lutherans is "Kicked out Catholics" as Martin Luther broke from the Catholic church whose teachings he disagreed with.

Lutherans are Christians. Martin Luther started protestantism when he nailed 95 thesis to the door of a catholic church. There is a modern denomination called Lutheran because of it. But they're just Christians. It's just like baptists or methodists.

Lutherans believe in Jesus just like most Christians do, but one of the differences lies in their belief that everything written in Revelation happened in 70 AD. They do not believe in the future great tribulation that most Christians believe in. To Lutherans, it is all over, nothing left to be fulfilled in prophecy.
