First of all, NEVER run. It will trigger the chase instinct of the bear. Let the bear know you are there by making noise. Stand up so you look bigger to the bear. Try to leave the area but walk away and keep your eyes on the bear. If the bear does attack you, playing dead might work with a grizzly. It usually won't with a black bear. If it comes down to it, your only chance against a black bear might be to fight it with what ever you can get your hands on. You can minimize your chance of bear encounters by being careful with food at your campsite. Leaving food out is just an invitation to animals. Don't keep the food inside your tent. It's best to hang it somewhere away from where you are sleeping. Common sense is the best way to avoid bears.

First of all never run this will trigger the chase instinct of the bear and then you become food for the bear because I do not know of any humans that can run 35mph.
Talk loud or even holler at the bear while slowly backing away. Most of the attacks happen when a bear is surprised.
If the bear does know you are there and continues to pursue you and over takes you, for any bear the fetal position with your fingers interlaced behind your head at the base of your skull is the best position you can be in. This position will not do anything fend the bear off but it could prevent the bear from biting the neck for a paralyzing effect.
If you know you are going to be in bear country invest in a container of bear mace or pepper spray for bears. Just make sure you know how to use it.

Actually you are never supposed to turn your back and run. 95% of the time, the bear will chase you down and attack. If the bear starts approaching you should make yourself look as big as possible and start yelling very loudly. You can slowly back up while doing this to give yourself some distance. Also, you can pick up any rocks in the area and start banging them together or you can use them as weapons if it comes to that. If you do get attacked, the best bet is to play dead if you have nothing to defend yourself with.
Of course that's if the bear sees you first.

Take lots of photographs so your relatives may be able to track down and kill the bear that might decide to eat you.
Or you could throw rocks at it and establish a boundary that the bear will think you are defending. You might get lucky and find a bear willing to abide by your rules.
I like the idea of not attracting bears to your campsite. Making lots of noise might deter them from coming too close.

WE experienced this.YOu have to remain quiet, sneak away in the opposite direction from where the bear is coming. We walked backwards slowly. Own of the camp ground came out and shot a gun up in the air and scared it away. If the bear should get ahold of you, you play dead and he will leave.

I have experienced this before and the best thing is to lay down and play dead bears like fresh food and something that they have to fight with to eat and kill. NEVER RUN. Bears have and instinct that if something is running from them they should chase it and kill it. Also never climb a tree..

Well, I'd say you should follow the same rules that a non camper would follow.......and that would be to run for your lives.
