It may. While breastfeeding does not encourage caries, it can still have a bad effect on the teeth particularly if the breast milk sits in the mouth too long. You definately should avoid giving juice or formula to a baby before bed without cleaning the teeth, however, you should be careful with night feeding as well. To be safe, you should always clean the baby's teeth after feeding no matter what the time.
This is particularly true if you have genes which prone the baby to bad teeth. There's a great article on the issue here: http://www.babyreference.com/CavitiesBreastfedBottlefed.html

Yes. Please look up baby bottle tooth decay and it will also explain about breasfeeding.
Your child can get cavities in her teeth before her teeth even erupt, this does happen more often than you think. The milk seeps into her gums and the sugar in the milk just rots the teeth before they erupt.
Wipe your child's gums thoroughly after feeding and never put her down with a bottle that has anything but water in it.
I have seen too many babies with cavities to not emphasize this enough. I have also had children as young as three, with only 8 teeth in their mouth, all with cavities, all which had to be crowned.

What I did was give them a quick wipe with a damp cloth. Those baby "teeth wipes" are a rip off my pediatric dentist told me. If they are a deep enough sleeper it shouldn't be a problem to clean them really quickly.

If she's awake wipe them, but if she's asleep don't worry. The breast doesn't allow the milk to pool in the mouth like a bottle can. Her teeth will be just fine.

that breastfeeding peer counselor is crazy -- breast milk isn't "fine" to leave on a baby's teeth. read the article that is linked above for some real information.

Not likely. Breastmilk is not cariogenic. Everything you ever wanted to know is included in the link below.

She will be fine. Your breastmilk has a ton of antibodies in it to protect her teeth. Keep up the good work. Good luck.

Cavities are caused by poor diet, so you don't have anything to worry about there.
