I would definitely say Australia. I've been all around the US (I'm from Louisiana) and while the scenery and people change, it's the same American feel. On the flipside, I've traveled to 4 other countries, and Australia is by far the best place to get a completely different perspective. When I went, I didn't want to come back. And I'm counting down the days when I can move there for good (within a year).

As for where in Australia, I'd go to Melbourne. It's great:) It's got city life, beaches, mountains, everything! And it's genuine Aussie living. I've never been to Sydney, but from what my husband (an Aussie from Melbourne) has told me, it's totally Americanized. What would be cool, though, is if you could go to both Melbourne and Sydney. I'd totally do that if I could:)

Australia! New York City is dirty, unsafe and for a 15 year old girl it has little to offer for more than a weeks visit.

Melbourne is a great location to base in Australia. It has so much to offer; great shopping and vibrant city life. friendly people, incredible scenery and all within easy traveling distance. It would take along time to see and do it all in Melbourne.

It is a great place to fly out and see the rest of Australia.

Come to Australia!

I would recommend Australia. If you prefer an athletic, swim, sun, and surf experience, try Cairnes, and make sure you go for a day long horseback ride at one of the local stables. If you prefer history, city life, and shopping, try Adelaide. In either case, spend no less than two weeks in Australia, and meet as many locals as you can. Sydney offers a lot, including a super commuter train system that will enable you to see and do a lot, but it is not as pleasant a city- more people, more traffic, and higher cost. If you are traveling with your parents, they will probably enjoy Sydney more than you will. Have a great trip!

I am an Australian who was raised in Sydney. I've never heard the saying before that Sydney is "Americanized" at all.. In actual fact, I think it's the most genuine Aussie place to go in Australia and I'm not being biast because I was raised in Sydney, but from most tourists I hear Sydney was the best place to go in Australia. It has great beaches, people, food, nightlife, and great Aussie fair dinkum weather. Australia I would pick over New York 10 times over. I wouldn't be surprised if you went to Oz you wouldn't want to go back home.

Defiantly Australia..go Melbourne or the gold coast. the people are great and there are some many things to see and do Melbourne is the home of AFL footy Australia's fav sport and the gold coast is known for its beautiful beaches, but for something different try Adelaide the city for churches and it has a lovely city feel to it with great things to see and do. just about any where down under is great fun and the people are brill too.

Australia has to be much safer than New York. I just traveled to Australia and I never felt unsafe. I don't go to New York because I know how unsafe it is. You have to watch your back all the time. I didn't worry about that in Australia. My biggest concern there was mosquitos and those nasty looking red ants with big, black backsides. They looked like they would hurt.
