I have never had a landline phone or home-internet before and I am trying to find out where I can get the cheapest - and most reliable- line rental so I can work out how much it will cost me- currently I spend £5 to £8 a week on the internet in internet cafes.

I get mine free from Orange Broadband and the service had been quite good so far.

The catch!?!? It came free when I signed up for their mobile phones.

The whole thing costs me £30 per month.

This includes 200mins anytime any network phone calls and 200 text messages per month, and yes - the unlimited broadband.

But of course, you have to have a BT land line. I think their cheapest at the moment is £11 monthly with unlimited local and national calls at night and weekends.

I don't think that's bad.

So many options out there isnt there. Compare and look at the small print. 1) How long is the contract? If its a special line rate you will find that they get far more money back over the rest of the contract ie if its £5 prer month for 3 months is it £20 for the next 2 years? Which you have commited to pay. 2) A lot of companies offer free evening and weekend calls but subject to a connection charge. This means you could be paying a minimum of up to 10p for every call you make even to a free phone number. 3) Rounding up to nearest minute. Some companies will round up to nearest minute making the quick " you nearly home" call to a mobile expensive, ie 10p connection + 20p per minute to mobile= 30p for a 15 second call. Think how you use the phone and work out if its better to have high connection charges but low line rental or the other way round.

I pay £20 a month to Tiscali. For that i get my broadband and all my landline phone calls for free 24 hours a day. Even the mobile costs are cheaper. You still need a BT landline though, but you just pick the cheapest line rental (about £8 a month).
So i pay about £28 a month, and thats all.
