It doesnt have the same characteristics as a cake, so why is it called a cake?

Cheesecake is a type of tart. So it's more pie than cake.

I'd say it's closer to a cake than a pie... but you're right - it's a little bit of each. Maybe it's just a tossup?

Hmm..I would consider it more of a pie but I don't know why it is called a cheeseCAKE. Let's start calling it a cheesePIE.
