Good foods: Artemis, Merrick, Chicken Soup, Innova Evo, Fromm, Wellness, Verus, Solid Gold, Eagle. (Find a naturalist pet store near you, Petsmart and Petco don't sell good brands.)

Mediocre foods: Nutro, Nutro Max, Canidae, Blue Buffalo, Royal Canin.

BAD foods: Iams, Purina, Pedigree, Hills' Science Diet, Alpo, Eukanuba, Kibbles n Bits, anything sold at the grocery store.

Personally, I'd reccommend the Innova Evo. It's grain free and low allergy, and the high protein/low carb ratio is good for dogs that tend to be obese (like pugs). Also, pugs are prone to allergies, so a low allergy food is a good choice. PLEASE don't buy anything from a grocery store! Those foods are so full of junk that they can make a healthy dog sick. Be careful!

PS Vets get paid to endorse Hills' Science Diet. It's still crap.

And Lisa P, if you look at dog food labels, puppy food is always HIGHER in protein than adult dog food- therefore, Innova Evo being high in protein actually makes it MORE suitable for a puppy, not less suitable. Also, it says right on the bag that Innova Evo is formulated for dogs and puppies. Puppies need higher amounts of protein to grow properly.

I feed my pug eukenuba dried biscuits. When she was really little i gave her weetbix with goats milk for breakfast, but she is now 7 months old so i have stopped that - i do on occasion feed her a healthy chicken mince dish - which your little pug would love too, my girl has been eating it since she was 8 weeks old. Remember to only give it to her as a treat once and a while - they should be solely on dried food for healthy teeth and bones.

Here's how to make my dish....

*Cook some chicken mince (i prefer chicken but you can use beef if you like)
*add mixed frozen veggies
*add an egg (remember with eggs they must be cooked properly as they can be poisoness for dogs if not cooked thoroughly.
*mix it all up
*remove from stove and crumble some weetbix into it or use dried dog buscuits
*Leave till luke warm and feed to puppy - GUARENTEE SHE WILL LOVE IT :)

If your pug is like most it has an underbite which can make chewing / eating a very trying task. My pug has to eat one kibble at a time because she has to put it in the back of her mouth and chew it between her back teeth since her front teeth don't meet. So a small kibble is essential, even when they are adult dogs.

Please go to dogfoodanalysis.com and read their reviews for dog food and select one of the premium foods with at least a 5-star rating.

I feed my 2-year-old Pug "Innova small bite". She is very picky and I have tried a few different brands, Innova small bite is the only one she will eat without me having to add something to it to tempt / bribe her to eat it.

IMPORTANT: I don't mean to offend other posters here, but Innova EVO and Solid Gold foods, while EXCELLENT and top-notch, have a VERY high protein content making them suitable for ADULT dogs ONLY, unless specified as a "puppy" food, such as Solid Gold Hundchen Flocken Puppy

I have two pugs. Pugs are very sensitive to food. They are prone to food allergies. Mine have them. The only food I feed them is Science Diet Ultra ZD (allergen free) - you can only get this from your vet, by prescription. They love it and no more allergies (ear infections).

It is also important to give your pug dry food not wet.

Good luck.

Royal Canin (Mediam 32) Purina One (puppy), I am a not sure if Wellness makes a puppy food, Nutro. I am not going name off a bunch of brand. I use Royal Canin for my Schnauzer. Royal Canin makes there food according to the breed. Go to a good feed store and you find these brands. If not Purina One is good food, and you can get it in Walmart.

Crap foods are Pederagree( althought they have a good commecial)
Iams , Eukanshit , Science pay the Vets diet

I'm not even going to start this again. All I'm going to say is Iams and Science Diet are crap.

Try Innova, Canidae, Nutro or Eagle Pack..

IAMs or Science Diet are both high quality foods. They both come in small bites. Try to resist buying a bunch of processed treats that are moist and colorful. It is best to stick to milk bones and healthier treats. Congratulations on your new pug!

Don't feed supermarket brand foods such as Pedigree, Purina, IAMS/Eukanuba, Science Diet..they are full of cheap fillers...carbohydrates, poor nutrition for dogs.Dogs are carnivores..meat eaters. They are designed to extract nutrition from meats not grains. It takes up to 3 times as much of a grain laden food for a dog to get proper nutrition as it does a good quality meat based food.

***Hill's (Science Diet) does NOT pay vets to sell their product. Vets just like any other pet business have to buy it at wholesale and tehn sell at retail..that's it...*******

Eukanuba has the best dog food for different breeds. Try going to their site, eukanuba.com and find out the best pet food for your pug. It really does help.
