I am taking the pre-requisites for the program. I do not have any experience in the field. How or what should I be doing in order to have some knowledge of the field.

The summer before I started Hygiene school, I spent quite a bit of time at my personal dentist's office. I already knew what the job of hygiene was, but wanted to familiarize myself with the daily workings of an office. Although I could do no hands on work with patients, I did learn how to use some of the equipment. I helped to develop x-rays and learned how to sterilize instruments which will be a daily part of your program.
I would ask your own personal dentist or another one you may know if you could just come in a few times and do some observing. They should be pretty open to the idea.

Apply as a hygiene assistant at any dental office. The older the hygienist the better off you will be. ONe trained in a periodontal clinic would be excellent or, just apply at a periodontist's office as an assistant.

Talk to your own dentist and see if you can spend some time either observing or volunteering
