I adopted a Jack Russell Terrier from the local shelter about two months ago. He's an adult (approximately 2 yrs.), and a great dog, so loving and smart. He was mostly house-trained by the time we got him. However, he's having this issue with urinating. I take him outside regularly to walk out his energy and go to the bathroom, which he does ALOT, while he's out there. Yet lately he'll be playing around or just walking, and in mid-walk, he'll just drop his hind end and start peeing on the carpet. I of course jump up and scold him for doing it, and take him immediately outside. It's not an everyday occurrence, but can at times be frequent. At first I thought it was because there was snow outside, but once that was gone, it still happened. Could it be a behavioral problem, or could it be something that a vet should look at? It's almost as if he has no control or doesn't realize he is doing it. Thanks.

Could be some sort of bladder infection, you should definitely have a vet look at it. I'm assuming since he came from a shelter he's neutered already? If not, that's a major problem and you should have it done ASAP. If it's not prompted by anything (weather, being startled or scared, etc.) then it's probably a medical problem.

He might have a blatter issue, or since he's a male, boys like to be dominate and tell other dogs "this is my territory" type of thing so he feels that peeing on everything will keep other dogs away. I don't know for sure, so ask your vet, he's the one with the best answers.

Sounds like a UTI, I would take him into the vet to have an exam and get started on some meds. NOW. If you don't fix this problem soon, he could become incontinent for the rest of his life.
