The Pope can be a voice for peace. Pope John Paul was very influential in healing the rifts between nations. I hope Pope Benedict can do the same.

The Soviet Union was so afraid of Pope John Paul II that they planned to assassinate him. They were right to fear the Pope. Ultimately Pope John Paul II was instrumental in the downfall of the Soviet Union.

Traditionally it had the function to be model for tolerance, and the "main embassador" of Jesus on earth. Thats why popes used to be part and mediators of political process. But it seems it has changed...
