The average heartbeat of a healthy person depends on their age, gender and
level of fitness. The heart, like any other body part, needs oxygen in
order to grow and develop properly. Fetal heart rates normally range
between 120 and 180 beats per minute. During infancy it drops to about 120
beats per minute. As a child grows, the heart rate slows. A seven-year
old's heart beats about 90 times per minute. By the age of 18, the heart
rate has stabilized at about 70 beats per minute, which equals about
100,000 beats per day! Generally, a female's heart beats faster than a
male's.

The maximum safe heart rate during exercise generally declines with age
from about 220 beats per minute in childhood to about 160 beats per minute
at age 60. At any age, however, the maximum heart rate depends on
physical condition. In other words, the better physical condition one is
in, the higher their maximum heart rate.

The typical resting heart rate for an adult is about 70. However, a heart
rate of below 40 would be considered normal for a highly trained endurance
athlete. Many years ago, when I was a distance runner in high school, my
resting heart rate was 44 beats per minute.

Resting heart rate is usually taken first thing in the morning it is a very good measure of cardiac/general fitness. A fit guy would measure below 60 bpm, a very fit guy below 50.(add about 5 for the girls and us old farts ). Just make sure you are fit and not suffering "Bradycardia".

After 20 miles it could be anything but if it comes back anywhere less than 120 in ten minutes your in pretty good shape.(recovery heart rate)

If you were pushing it pretty hard or climbing some killler hills, somewhere in the 135-145 range would be about right. After resting for 20 minutes or so, it should be back down under 100.

Normal resting HR would be 72 to 80 BPM depending on the individual. Just after a 20 mile ride and stepping off the bike your HR would vary depending on how hard you were riding.

this won't help you much, but in my case just having a heartbeat after 20 miles would be a bonus & a bloody miracle.
