Cold sores are caused by a herpes virus. Just like with genital herpes, there's no cure. They may occur more frequently in the wintertime, because your immune system might be a bit weakened by a cold or other common wintertime illness.

Some people with genital herpes take daily doses of antiviral medicines to prevent flare-ups. Whether it's common practice for people to do this with cold sores or not--i'm not sure off hand. You could ask your physician or dentist. Especially if you're having very frequent flare-ups.

You should know that if you do start to have a flare-up, the sooner you get started on your antiviral pills, the better. It will make the flare-up milder and not last as long.

Good luck to you.

I have to use chapstick all the time, If my lips get the least bit chapped, I get a cold sore. I was using campho (sp?). Well I bought some abreva. No it's not cheap. But it only takes a very small little dab. You know how you can kind feel it hurting before you can see it? As soon as I feel that I start putting a little dab of abreva on it a few times a day right away. It never gets to the stage where it can be seen. I tried it & now that is all I use. I swear by it.

i've never had them, my wife's had them since she was at least in kindergarten (she had them during her yearbook photo, oh no! ;-p)

Typically she gets them whenever her immune system is low. I specifically remember one night, around St. Patty's Day last year when she got completely knackered / wasted and screwed up all at the same time (depending on which term makes the most sense to you) and the next day she had a cold sore.

In fact, pretty much every time she's run her body ragged or has been exposed to someone else's active cold sore, she sprung one up.

I don't know how they happen, but I know a way to get them away.Take some lemon juice and put it on the cold sore.It stings, but it makes it go away.
