It always does - especially when it is almost cured. Gargling with warm salty water or mouthwash can reduce the pain and inconvenience. You can find some good home remedies at http://ailments.in/sorethroat.html

Anxiety causes tension. Tension affects muscles anywhere on your body, including your throat. If it is OK during the day then it seems that it could be tension, caused by just getting through your day, on top of the grief of losing your Mother. Try gargling with warm water with a touch of mouthwash when you get home. See if that helps it ease off during the evening, if it does then it is probably tension. If not then get back to the doctor, check if the redness is still there and ask for further treatment.

Most sore throats are viral, there is little to see and little active treatment. 3 weeks is at the high end of duration. Do you smoke if you do STOP. It might not be unreasonable due to the duration of your symptoms for your GP to do a blood screen and a throat swab. He should be happy to do these tests if only for your reassurance.

Normally I give a bit of guidance on medical matters, as I'm a trained (ex Royal Navy) paramedic, but, as Dr Frank has answered your question, go with what he says. Always consult a GP if you are worried about your health.

GPs know a lot more about health issues than paramedics.
