Martedì Grasso is the last day of carnevale, the next sunday start 40 days before Easter... the big party before 40 days of restrictions( for catholics... did you see 40 days and 40 night?)..

it's a big event for children who can dress like holloween, eat candy and a lot of bugie (an italian sweet eaten just in carnival)

It started as a pagan ritual - the idea was to scare away evil spirits with all the noise and the costumes and such. When Catholicism became the predominant religion, it shifted and became more like a "last big party before Lent". There are too theories where the name comes from - one says it has to do with the carriages used for the parade, but the other says it come from "Valis Carne" - good-bye too meat.

It ends on Mortedi Grosso/Ash Wednesday because that's the first day of Lent, so there's no more partying, alcohol, or meat until Easter.

Carnival is celebrated in several parts of the world- New Orleans, Rio de Janiero, etc.- and ends on Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday). It is a weeks-long celebration that ends the day before Ash Wednesday, just as the period of Lent begins in the Catholic religion. It's kind of the last big blow out before the restrictions of Lent begin.
