The pain medications used can be different for cats and dogs. Especially with cats you must ALWAYS get a vet's approval for use of any aspirin and our over-the-counter pain meds are NEVER used with cats.
Recently my Alexander had a bad tooth and I was given some narcotic pain medication from the vet in liquid form. Pain patches are now put on cats following surgeries.
Some vets are now prescribing Metacam for pain in cats with cancer. This is "off-label" for cats and can be used with dogs. You can go to: www.persian cats.org and read under "Medical Alerts" the results of a study done by the FDA about metacam and cats. Don't ever let a vet prescribe this for your cat without reading the study and showing a copy to your vet before you give it.

Actually pain meds for dogs and cats work similarly to human meds...however they are generally metabolized differently. So...don't give your pet human pain meds. The only exception that I've ever gotten veterinary approval for is non-buffered aspirin. But I'm not sure on the dosage and I do remember it being a lot smaller than what you give a human...and it will depend on the weight of the dog. Obviously you wouldn't give a 10 pound dog the same size pill you would take as a 150 pound man.
My dog uses "Rimidyl" for his knee and hip pain brought on by arthritis.

The only oral analgesic drug that is commonly available for use in cats is butorphanol. The oral analgesic acetaminophen should NEVER be used in cats because it is highly toxic to cats.
You need to take your cat to the vet for a proper diagnosis of why the cat is in pain. Then he can prescribe the proper pain med. Do not give human pain medications to a cat (aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, etc.) becuase these are very toxic to cats. Although a very very low doze aspirin may be administered (1/2 children's aspirin for example was prescribed for my cat once). But you need to be carefu becuase aspirin can adversely impact the cat's kidneys.

I just discovered something very strange. I had a cat that had to have her back leg amputated. They gave me pain medicine and I went to see what it was. The bottle just says pain medication.
I went back and looked at the bill and it just says pain medication. I have no idea what I was giving my cat. I've never seen a medication not show the name of what it is.
Sorry can't answer your question, but you gave me a question to ask my vet now.
