You won't be able to know for sure about hips until he is x-rayed. Take him to the vet, the vet will go over him for Pano as well. A dog with Pano will hold a leg up from pain. Have this dog x-rayed. He could be dysplastic, but until you get a good x-ray under sedation of his hips, you will not know.

Could be a number of things HD, torn ACL, or just an injury. Make sure you go to a vet with experience in GS, or an orthopedic vet. If the dog "stands" with no weight on leg, very good chance it is torn ACL.
Hip problems are 70% enviromentally avoidable. Weight and fast growth & over exercising a young dog are the main key factors, not genetics (I breed GSD and have never had a thin dog with bad hips). Normally if it is genetic HD, it will show in "both" hips according to studies. Do your research on-line and look at resent studies, not outdated material over a few years old. Brining the weight down will be your #1 factor to keep the injury/problem under control.

Never wrong to worry about your dog.

Eliminate the obvious first by checking the pad of his foot. Have a real close look though as small cuts and foreigh bodies can hide under the hair between the pads (he'll let you know if you find anything!)
If all clear then sounds like a muscle strain or he's landed awkwardly.
He is quite young to suddenly start showing problems with his hips, and they tend to walk kind of lob sided rather than holding the paw off the floor, but if you are still concerned in a couple of days it would be best to get him to a vet.

I experienced some problems with my German shepherd's bones growing faster than her body would comfortably allow. I'd never heard of this before she was taken to the vet - I thought perhaps it was early signs of hip or joint problems.

It could be something as simple as a splinter or sprain. Then it could be a more serious issue. I would suggest monitoring your German and if symptoms deteriorate or resolve and come back make an appointment with your vet.

he could just have liament damage if it doesnt go away after a few weeks then take him to the vet my dog had a limp but shes fine now so its probably just ligiment damage, you are not worrying over nothin your just bein cautous just keep an eye on him , take him for little and often walks and dont let him run up n down the stairs or itll put more strain on it. im sure he will be fine but like i said let him takit easy and dont over exercise him k xx

He might have hip dysplasia i researched and this is what i got:

Some dogs will show clear signs of hip dysplasia at a very young age, before the arthritis sets in.

Most likely he does. Go to the vet so it doesn't become worse in time. I heard German Shepards have hip problems even at an early age like most big dogs. Please go to your vet, your eyes might not tell you everything your dog is going through.

you must go to a vet. It could be nothing, or it could be a fracture, the worst is damage to the growth plate, go and get him checked and do not exercise him too much until you have been to the vet

Look over his paw. If you find a bump or a lump on it, he might have something in it. Try squeezing it and if you see something take him to the vet. Squeeze his paw to see if he is in any pain. He might have a sprained foot.

Just take him to the vet.

He could but could have just pulled a muscle or cut the pad on his paw.

Take him to get checked by your vet.
