Having lived in England since 1990 and regularly, every one to two years, return to Perth. I havee found that for a flight that takes close to 24 hours the cheapest is not always the best. so if you want to arrive in Oz ready to party or what ever then I highly recommend Singapore Airlines as by far the best. These may not be the cheapest but they are usually a lot cheaper than QANTAS or BA (bloody awful in my translation). They also have screens in the backs of the seats with an amazing selection of movies, TV and Nintendo games to keep you occupied for the duration of the flight. The last time I flew home there was a choice of about 20 movies, new releases and older ones. Others worth considering are Cathay Pacific or Emirates. I haven't used the Virgin airline service as yet so I can't compare them.
Singapore's Changi Airport has also got to be the best Airport in the world without a doubt. Almost worth going just for that.
Hey enjoy the trip and try to get to the West coast as it is very beautiful.

There is relatively little difference in the various airfares on a long haul flight like Aus/UK
The vast bulk of the cost of an airfare is the aeroplane itself, the fuel to keep it flying and airport taxes.
On long haul flights these factors outweigh peripheral savings such as how many on-board staff and the overheads associated with operating the airline.
BA is possibly the most expensive, closely followed ny QANTAS, and then all of the other majors such as Malaysia and Singapore. After that the will be a slight gap to carriers such as Royal Brunei or Garuda, but be warned, the cheaper airlines stop like commuter buses and your journey will take up to double the time that of a major carrier. Are you ready to spend 3 days getting there? Hanging around airports as a transit passenger probably only rivals air travel itself as an awful way to spend time, so the shorter the better - hence the price differential

Look on Thomas Cooks website they have some excellent deals for flights to Australia, were going at Easter and got 2 return flights with Singapore airlines which means we can travel direct from Manchester instead of having to fly to London first, 3 nights in Singapore at a really good hotel and airport parking for under £2,000 that includes our own insurance too.

Qantas is the best airline to fly with - Although Virgin isn't too bad now either, depending on where you are coming from.
Some countries have stand-by flights, where you pay a discounted rate and are on the stand-by list to fill up a flight that isn't completely full, I think the way it works is that you are on standby for 2 or 3 flights before they just throw you on the next plane, with this option though you might be waiting around at an airport for a while waiting for a flight.
Take a look at these websites:

try Air Tahiti Nui, they fly to Sydney from several places in the world - seats OK if you are a slight build, food is good, and their fares are good prices. don't stopover in Tahiti though unless you have big $$$ to spend - very expensive.
