It is different everywhere. For example my municipal police service rank structure is slightly different from the Ontario Provincial Police structure. Ours is (lowest to highest):

Cadet
Constable (detective constable-same rank more money)
Sergeant
Staff Sergeant
Inspector
Staff Inspector
Superintendent
Deputy Chief
Chief

NYC has one heck of a rank structure. Never could get it straight. But here in my place:

Patrolman
Detective (with a sergeant and a lieutenant overseeing)
Sergeant
Master Sergeant
Lieutenant
Captain Deputy Chief
Chief

The below websites show the "typical" standard of rank associated in MOST police departments.

Within my own department we have:

Sheriff
Chief Deputy
Captain
Lieutenant
Sergeant
Deputy

Our jail incorporates the use of Corporal whereas our enforcement division does not!

Best wishes!
