I hear more of a loud rattle when I accelerate in 1st and 2nd gear. Never do I hear it in reverse or in idle. I was told my u-joint s were bad and at $20 I bought new ones. I drive a 1999 Ford F150 4.2 V6 4x4. Any help here would be appreciated. Thanks.

Most 4X4.s have a idle bearing in the drive shaft, it sounds like that is the problem not u-joints.

If your U-joints were bad, you'd hear a clunk when you put the truck into reverse and when you put it in drive assuming you have an automatic transmission or when you first ease the clutch out on a stick.

You just have to crawl under there and grab your shafts and move em around till you find the bad ones you got a short one to front wheels and a long one to rear 4 u-joints in all........man i hope it aint your transfer case also fill your tranny up with gear oil go to Auto.Zone .Com for any instuctions you might need great site

everytime ive heard of a ujoint going out, it would only clunk loudly in reverse, it is possible though i suppose, but then again your clutch could be wearing producing metal shavings that are clogging your transmission, but i think that would be alot more noticible in other gears as well
