Liver inflammation is called hepatitis. It is most commonly caused by viral infections, autoimmune destruction of liver cells, or toxic substances. Acetaminophen and ibuprofen are two things that cause inflammation. I have experienced inflammation from taking pain medicine following surgery, and it wen t away shortly after i stopped taking the pills. I would not have known I had liver inflammation if it had not showed up on a blood test.

There are two major forms of hepatitis: one in which the liver is inflamed quickly (called acute hepatitis) and one in which the liver is inflamed and damaged slowly, over a long period of time (called chronic hepatitis). While hepatitis can be caused by any of the means mentioned above, most commonly it is due to infection by one of several viruses, termed hepatitis viruses. These viruses have been named in the order of their discovery as hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E.

Fatty liver causes liver enlargement, tenderness, and abnormal liver function. The most common cause is excessive alcohol consumption. It is usually a reversible condition, resolving with abstention from alcohol.

Believe the alcohol, there are too many people worldwide that have died from cirrhosis of the liver due to alcohol abuse and it starts out being irritated by it or inflamed and it will gradually harden/deteriorate if your liver is not functioning your done.Milk Thistle is suppose to help in this area I haven't tried it but its quite popular in Europe and its easily available from the herbalist/health food stores. Also get a check for Hepatitis that will do in your liver also, and Ibuprofen is for real hard on the liver.

a person does not have to drink alcohol to have inflammation of the liver. there are diseases such as autoimmune disease, NASH (fatty liver) as well as viral infection such as hcv or hbv.
other viral infections can cause liver disease as well such as medication induced hepatitis (herbs can cause this too).
other things like iron buildup, cancer ect.....
inflammation of the liver can be caused by trauma as well.
when one has mononucleosis, the liver can become inflammed as a natural occurence.

try to avoid red meats, do not take vitamins with iron in it....foods with iron in it....drink water and tea without artificial sweeteners in them. if you can't have sugar, have none at all.

follow up with the doctor. if your alt and ast levels appear normal, have him run a test for hepatitis c anyway...this happens with some of us heppers, that is why it sometimes can take decades before a correct diagnosis.

everyone has at least one risk factor for hepatitis c! get tested!

good luck!

You have an underlying problem, I would go see your hepatologist right away. My wife died of liver cancer in 2004.
