After experimenting on my teen yrs. (not so long ago), I came to the conclusion that you are better off leaving the coloring to the experts. You can change your hair color as many times as you wish, but don't do it yourself, unless you are going darker than you're natural hair color. Otherwise your hair will turn out all colors except what you wanted. You need to be extra special if you chose a color with red tones, hopes this helps!

You should be okay redoing your entire hair yourself, but leave it up to the pros if you can't figure out what colour to pick from the box in the drugstore.
You can re-color your hair every 3 months minimum without problems, any more than that and your hair will dry out and look awful. This is also with a ton of conditioning, and not using a lot of hair straighteners, heating elements, etc.
With your highlights, I'd go to the pros and ask them to work your hair into a base colour, and then from there, build into an auburn/reddish brown. But if that auburn/reddish brown is drastically different from what you normally have as your hair colour, you have to be mindful that you'll be touching up your hair colour constantly to keep the colour looking natural, and not as though you have two tone hair..
