Two colours on opposite sides of the color wheel, which when placed next to each other make both appear brighter. The complementary color of a primary color (red, blue, and yellow) is the colour you get by mixing the other two (red + blue = purple; blue + yellow = green; red + yellow = orange). So the complementary color for red is green, for blue it's orange, and for yellow it's purple.

Complementary colors are those on opposite sides of the color wheel. For example, red and green would be complementary, or orange and blue, or yellow and purple.

Complimentary colors are colors that are opposite of each other on the color wheel. See http://www.tigercolor.com/color-lab/color-theory/color-harmonies.htm for more details.

red and blue for instance harmony in red looks just as good painted in blue in that they transition well in declaring their ideas you could paint harmony in red in blue and it would be just as suave
blue and green are complimentary in that they speak with depth and power but don't create chaos for the most part
browns and greens also have powerful harmony ,especially in landscapes, see any thing by nicholas poussin
