We are new to homeschooling, and I have been trying to find a place to buy material online, as we live on the Amazon as missionaries. Someone suggested Switched on Schoolhouse, but when I do a search for it, I get thousands of hits. Where is the best place to buy homeschool stuff in your experience?

I began homeschooling with Abeka curriculum which is not super expensive, but still pretty costly. After a while, I remembered why we're homeschooling...to give my children what school format can't--flexibility. So, we tossed out a set curriculum and began getting different stuff from diffrent publisher. I use Math-U-See for math (I was a math teacher and let me tell you how wonderful this curriculum is!) It's very reasonable.

As for the best place to buy, try ebay. I find most of my stuff there. I'll be praying for the Lord to provide!

p.s. do you subscribe to The Old Schoolhouse magazine(Christian homeschooling magazine)? I believe they give free subscription to missionaries!

Switched on Schoolhouse is put out by Alpha Omega Publications. Should be the first hit when you search for it.

A Beka is supposed to be reasonably priced and complete, too. Christian Liberty Press is another reasonably priced one--you can get complete grade kits for $100-$200. If you can handle just having the student materials and not the teacher materials, you can get Student Kits from Bob Jones University Press for not too much.

I just kind of pick up things as I go along and feel a need. But I'm not in the Amazon and we have a great library system here which we make good use of!

Try this site. http://oldfashionededucation.com

I use it all the time for my kids at home and the ones I teach in school. Not sure what grade level you are looking for, but you should be able to find everything here and the only cost is for the paper and ink to print some of it out on.

Online from other home schoolers. Might be easier to talk to a home schooler near you and find the local home school web sight.
