I don't even know if that's how you spell it, but it's how it sounds. It's this lovely bread/roll my grandmother makes. We always eat it with chocolate milk. It is not sweet but it is sort of a dessert roll. It is usually in a braid or coiled into a 'W' or 'S' shape. It has black seeds in it and is brushed with egg to make it shiny while baking. I want to say it's Arabic (we are Syrian) but I may have made that up.

Do you mean CHALLAH rolls? They fit the description you are giving. They are Jewish.

Any traditional Jewish meal begins with the breaking of bread. Challah is a special kind of bread used for Shabbat and holidays. It is a very sweet, golden, eggy bread. The taste and texture is somewhat similar to egg twist rolls (those little yellow rolls that look like knots). The loaf is usually braided, but on certain holidays it may be made in other shapes. For example, on Rosh Hashanah, it is traditional to serve round challah (the circle symbolizing the cycle of life, the cycle of the years).

I also found some variations to the recipe (one has the poppy seeds you mentioned):

Yes, kleetcha is actually made in Aleppo (Syria) as well as in North-East Syria and Irak.

It is a homemade spice bread slightly sweet. Sometimes it is stuffed with dates... Delices with coffee or tea.

Receipes vary from region to region. The spice mix may include: cinnamon, allspice, aniseed, cardamom, ginger powder, etc.. It may also include those black seeds called in french Nigelle which have the same shape as sesame seeds but not the same taste.
Enjoy !
