I am never late for work. I don't drink on the job. I have worked from ground up with this same company for 20 plus years and now am in upper management. Yes, I drink to relax and have fun and do drink everyday to some extent. I know when to quit. But, some still would call me an alcoholic. As long as I can function (WHICH I HAVE FOR 25 YEARS OF DRINKING) then I dont see a big deal about it. Would you consider me an alcoholic?

No, I am not trying to rationalize. I don't want to stop and am telling you I FUNCTION perfect. Why should I stop because of society thinking I am a drunk. I am perfectly fine with it.

If you're functioning, not a danger to yourself or others, who cares?

It's like the people who call those in chronic pain "addicts" because they need medication to function, GET OVER IT PEOPLE!

People toss those labels around, not caring that others find the prejudicial and/or hurtful.

The DSM-IV lists "alcohol dependence" and describes it as drinking despite adverse consequences. If you're not drinking to the point of having those kind of consequences, don't let anyone try to tell you what to do.

BTW, I'm 5+ years sober. I had consequences.

I would consider you an alcoholic if you depend on drink to get you through the day or if you couldn't control the amount of alcohol you was drinking, but you have control over what you are doing so no I dont think you are.

Yes.. there is no recourse to being called an alcoholic other then to say" yes I am one". Otherwise you are either a" Liar" or a"deniar" and any deffences that you try to make just seem to prove so..It's sort of a witch hunt isn't it? So go ahead as you are keeping it on the safe side, and defend your honor with a toast like the other 75% of the world.
Cheers.
The answer is still ..Yes

Drinking increases your risk for cancer and other diseases. But if you're willing to take that risk it sounds like you have everything under control. You are like my dad....he drinks but he doesnt get DRUNK. If you go a few days without it and you get sick or all you think about is "I NEED A DRINK!!!" Then yes you are an alcoholic.

I don't think you are an alcoholic unless your relationships are affected or your life has become unmanagable in some way. Two drinks per day is considered moderate drinking.

Can you say DENIAL? You sound like every other alcoholic out there who wants to rationalize their drinking.

You're an alcoholic if you drink every day. So, stop drinking. If you find that you can't NOT drink, or that when you aren't drinking all you do is think about it.....then that will prove it to you.

I don't mind if you drink, that's your business, But if you drink and get behind the wheel of a car, then it becomes my business, especially if the person you run into is me. Get help.
