I've had a Cocker Spaniel for 5 years, and now I'm planning to get a Chihuahua dog today. Now, how can I make the two dogs get along? How can I avoid the jealousy from the Cocker Spaniel, how can I make them be friends?

Thank you for your help!

Relax.
Introduce the new little on to the CS like he's a gift. They'll adjust and will be wrestling playing in notime.
I have two males. One always dominates and the other knows it and reacts appropriately.
Enjoy them and have fun.

What I would do is introduce then in neutral territory. Maybe a dog park or somewhere neither dog has been before. This way your dog won't feel like this other dog is trespassing on his territory. If possible, have one person bring one dog and another person bring the other. Keep them on leashes at first and if anything goes wrong give the two a break from each other and let them explore a little. Then try again when they're a little more comfortable with their surroundings. Your cocker spaniel will probably be jealous at one point or another. Just reassure him/her that you still love them by focusing all your attention on them at least a few times a day. Scratch them behind the ear, pet them, whatever, just make sure they know you still care. My cocker, Sandy, didn't like other dogs much, but he wasn't socialized a lot as a puppy. Your dog will probably be all right with this new dog if they have been around other dogs a lot. My dog, Joey, is a rottweiler/lab mix and he lived with his brothers and sisters until he was six months old. Now, he loves other dogs and is ecstatic at any chance he has to play with one.

Cocker Spaniel have a feel of control, make sure you take small steps b/c the Spaniel see the Chihuahua as a problem and breaking his time with you.. so share the same amount of time with both... hopefully in time the Spaniel will be friend with the Chihuahua.. Make sure the Chihuahua is not hyper and jumping all over the Spaniel that is another thing that will make the Spaniel pull away

When introducing the dogs to one another be sure that you are calm, if the you will be nervous the dogs will sence it and therefore may act agressivly towards ech other thinking the the other is trying to harm you. If you are getting a young Chihuahua make sure that you let your oder dog steadilly get used to the new one. In order to do that make sure that you don't let the new dog just jump all over the 5 year old trying to play.
If any of the dogs growl at each other or are violent to eachother in some way (again you must be calm all the time) correct them with a loud "NO" to help you with this you might want to give the agressive dog a signal like put your hand in front of it or something. What I do is I just give the mean one a little tap on the neck if they are agressive.
Follow thease directions and your dogs should be fine.
Most improtantly: STAY CALM AT ALL TIMES!
Because belaeve it or not if you're for example excited your dogs will get excited too which might lead to agressin.

You need to introduce your new dog to your current dog SLOWLY. Also, help establish that your current dog is the alpha by always feeding it first, giving its treat first, petting first. I know it will be hard to do, but don't get so wrapped up in your new baby puppy that you ignore your Cocker. After you introduce your puppy later today, put it in a kennel and play with your Cocker for 15-20 minutes just so she knows that you aren't "replacing" her.

There isn't really a way to make the be "friends", but you can make it known that you are the boss and that you won't tolerate dominant behavior from either party. If either dog begins aggressive behavior, immediately discourage, and seclude the offender.

They may bond easily or they may not. It's the chance you take in adopting another animal. It may make your Cocker so mad at you that it's disposition changes. The new dog may make the other dog miserable. I have had all of this happen to me.

It would be nice if you can return the other dog, if it doesn't work out. Some places may let you do this if you are uncertain. I should have done this. That should be an understandable request with some limitations of,course, even a 24 hour test period would be helpful.

Good Luck to you and your pooches!

give the Chihuahua a safe place to retreat to, now give your Cocker Spaniel a lot of attention so he won't feel abandoned. include him in any activities you have with the new dog. if the new dog is a pup it should be easier. just take your time.

you have to assert the cocker as the alpha by letting him be in charge first keep the pup in a serparate room in the house and let the cocker roam free then switch them this allows them to have a sniff around and get used to the sent of the other dog without confrontation dont you ever watch the dog whisperer hahaha

i have been in the same perdicument we had a yorkie for 7 yrs and then got a 8 week old jack russel he was jelous as hell he got depressed and started being sick for attention after about 2 weeks he started to sniff her all the time! about a week later after all the sniffing he finally made friends she loves him eventually we had to have him done he ended up liking her so much , but a couple of things we tried were putting them together at night and putting there food bowels together so they haad to stand next to each other also you could try having a really big bed so they both fit on it and get used to each other. so the best thing to do is wait and be very patient dont forget to give them both the same amount of attention hope i have been useful good look

The best way to introduce the two dogs is to take them on a walk together. You can't force them to like each other, but most dogs get along and their will always be a pecking order, so once that's sorted out I reckon it will be ok.
