Think about what you have to offer and find those places to give that fit your gifts. Might be related to work you do now, but it might be something else that you'd like to do.
The first thing that came to mind was to become an EMT and be a first responder in emergencies. That's a grueling job but very satisfying. Often EMTs are the people that save the lives- they keep the people alive until they get to the hospital.
If you like working with dogs, consider Search & Rescue- training a dog to help you search for people lost or trapped in rubble after a natural disaster or bombing. There were many used at ground zero after 9/11.
For something less dramatic but still helping people, consider volunteering with Habitat for Humanity or other local charities in your area.
What is your education in? Some skills translate wll into work in non-profit organizations. There are non-profits of all kinds that might be a good fit for you.
Feel like dropping everything and doing good? Join the Peace Corps for a year or two. There are Peace Corp assignments in the US and abroad.
Love children? Love sports? Get a job in a rec center and engage kids that otherwise might get into trouble.
Good for you. The world needs more people who are willing to help others to make the world a better place. More power to you!

The first thing you can do is take a First Aid/CPR class offered by the American Red Cross. That will be a good foundation for helping others. Try volunteering, especially at a Red Cross or Salvation Army in your area.

good life goal there. world vision, samaritans purse, amnesty international, or salvation army. If yoiu feel brave enough then go into the world and see the poverty for yourself. It's a new experience trust me. You might even find other org. that could use help. Volunteer from your area or go into the field yourself and touch lives. Working people who need love and other kinds of support is a rewarding and even tough job.

I was racing across the bay two years ago at dusk, taking a little known short cut home across the tidal flats, I saw a jet ski floating and wondered (where's the operator), I saw an arm stick up out of the water, I stopped and saw a man in the water bleeding badly on the face, I carefully manouvered over to him in the flats, He was barely conscience, I tried pulling him into the boat and he started screaming in agony, I was like "OH SH-T, this guy's REALLY INJURED", I look over for my radio (GREAT, I FORGOT IT), I grabbed my cell phone and luckily I had pre-set the USCG phone # in it and hit it, they arrived in a few minutes (felt like a few hours, while I was holding onto this guy, and my arms were turning into spaghetti) but, we could not get the guy into their boat on the backboard, it was too high out of the water, my boat was low (15' Boston Whaler), so we slid the backboard onto the nose, the Coast Guard said "Follow us", and hit the sirens and lights, and we blasted across the 5 mph zone of the bay to meet a waiting ambulance (he had a broken hip), The Coast Guard said that I did a great job of helping them, and thanked me, as I thanked them for getting to me so fast. All worked out well, and the next day the USCG (Aux.) called and said "We could use a guy like you", I said "SURE"... now I'm a member, and I go out on patrols with them, I'm just sorry it took an accident to find out what I do best !

Go to your local ghetto, and start mingling with the homies.
Oh, and you should probably sell your internet subscription and computer too.
