Invest in a "squirrel baffle". These can be made at home with a little ingenuity using a sheet of aluminum or the top cut from a gallon milk jug, or even using a large funnel (like you get from the hardware store), but it's easier to buy one.

Make a wreath of pine cones, seeds and peanut butter. Choose a spot more than 100 fee from the nearest tree branch and hang the wreath from a sky hook.

Bird Feeders are great and my kids love to see the same birds return every year. Just make sure you don't have a problem with mice/rats because according to my friend, they enjoy the fallen seeds.
