Frescos around that time painted or applied the paint/colors into wet plaster so when they dried it was 'forever'. It became the wall itself. Some artists in the 11th-15th centuries also used egg yolk mixed with colors for a very hard and durable medium that has withstood time. In Canada, Natives used bone marrow or brain to achieve the same result albeit not as long-lasting.

I'm not aware that they are. Wall paintings at Pompeii were preserved by the lava that buried the town Other representational art that has been preserved are mosaic floors that, again, were covered.. I don't believe that there are any other kinds of Roman pictorial art that is preserved.
