I have had my first tattoo over the weekend and am a little worried as i was told to use vaseline intensive care by my tattoist and my skin is flaking with the ink in it and it appears that the ink has faded and cracked have i over moisturised it and messed it up or is this normal or am I being paranoid??? I realise it scabs but the black and red ink look like they are cracking. Please advise.

It's ok you will be fine
Always a little paranoid when the whole new tattoo thing happens. The type of scabs you get aren't like normal scabs. Just make sure you keep putting on what your tattooist told you, and don't deviate from it. They give you those instructions because that is what they feel works best... tust them.
What ever you do don't pick the scab. If you are really worried about the color after a few days of healing call up the artist and see if you may need a touch up.
Good Luck! Enjoy the Ink!

It always looks a little worrisome when your tattoo is healing. The scabbing will have color in it so it will appear as though your color is cracking and flaking off. Don't be discouraged. Just keep the area protected with the lotion that the artist recommended, avoid sun exposure and depending on the location of your tattoo, when you shower or bathe don't allow the water to beat down onto the area or soak in a tub for long periods of time until the tatto has healed properly. Good luck!

Every artist has a different healing process....i have heard moisterize alot and also no more than once a day. I have 12 tats myself and my best friend is a tatoo artist. Do what you are most comfy with. what you are describing is totally normal, you are healing as you would with any other scab esp if it in area that you move alot (hence the cracking etc) i am currently healing a tat myself and swear by vasaline insive care. I wouldnt recommend a&d after day 1 or 2 or triple antibiotic as these are drawing salves and will pull color out.

I never used vaseline for my tats, I used a&d ointment, I think you should go back to the tattoo artist and have them look at it. it might be possible that after it healed and peeled it dulled the color, and depending on you skin tone or how light it is you may need to have the color retouched. go to the artist before too much time elapses and they should fix it for you. worst case scenario is they will tell you it's healing fine and there is nothing to worry about. All the best.

The ink penetrates more than just the first layer of skin. As you shed dead skin (more than usual because of the tattoo right now), color will come off with it! It will look like the ink is cracking because it is...on the damaged layer of skin. I use vasoline on mine!

a & d ointment is the best. it is recommended by many tattoo artist. and it is normal for your skin to scab and soem of the ink to flake off. make sure you keep it moisturized with a non frangranced moisturizer after the intial healing.

I have 10 and have always washed them with anti-Bactria soap and used antibiotic ointment, never had any trouble. On some people there is flaking but after a week that should be gone. Good Luck.

This is very normal....as the scabs do have color because of the ink...when you get a tattoo the color is always brighter at first, but as it heals it becomes lighter.

Do not use Vaseline! it is a petroleum product ,that is a no no....Go to the drug store ask for a triple antibiotic....Keep tattoo moist...keep out of sun...and don't let clothing rub on it until healed

it's normal for it to crack and scab and whatnot, so don't you fret. i agree with tattoo goo, but you have to remember that your tat isn't going to look as pristine and clear as it did when you first got it. i highly doubt that you overmoisturized... just relax and in a few weeks it should be perfect... happy trails and best of luck!!!
