Hire a professional to take your wedding photos, you don't want random, candid shots for everything. Put out some of the disposable cameras so you do have SOME random and candid shots of the people at your wedding and them having fun. Having both kinds of pictures is your best bet. Seriously, hire a professional for your official wedding pictures, please!

Having disposable cameras are a fun idea especially at the reception..have one on each table you get all sorts of different points of view. Now for the actual wedding party pictures I'd find a professional or a friend who has a good digital camera. Had a friend who did the disposable cameras at the reception and still look back and laugh at all the fun everyone was having..a professional can't catch all the people having fun at the same time, if you have a disposable at each table with "rules" on what kinds to take or not take then I think it'd be fine.

I'm with Beffy on this one.

My sister put out the disposables at the reception only and the kids took pictures where the camera was always pointing upward to photograph under the chins of the adults who were standing and were taller then them.

Someone else took pictures of guests as the opened their mouths to eat. Not pretty.

In all the cost of the cameras combined with the cost of developing a bunch of crummy shots was a big waste of money.

Hire the pro or at the very least ask the person you know who takes the best pictures, has a good eye for composition and has a decent camera to do the honors.

You will most likely regret not having nice pictures years down the road, especially if you have kids someday.

I would honestly not waste time on disposable cameras. Most of the shots don't come out that great when you leave the photography to the guests. We did both and while you do get a few great candid photos, those from the photographer are way better.

Also, put some effort into finding a great photographer. Mine sucked because I tried to save some money and went with someone in the family (although he was distant enough that I had never met him before). This is one area where if you can afford to splurge a little, then do it. Looking back I wish I would have. I've been a part of tons of weddings the past few years (guess its just my age-everyone is getting married) and all of my friends have had awesome pictures from their wedding and great experiences with their photographer. I have given them all this same advice.

Good luck!

Disposable cameras are fine for additional candid pictures. But to make sure you get decent pictures of what's most important to you, I'd ask a family member whose experienced in photography to take pictures for you if a professional is not in your budget. If you do not have a family member or close friend who is good with photography then I'd recommend hiring a photography student (high school or college) instead. Many students need opportunities for their portfolios and could always use a little extra money, so this is also a good inexpensive option to hiring a professional photographer.

I don't know if it's better or not but it can be done. You could also have someone, like a family member or close friend, use a digital camera to take your pictures for you.
A fun idea with the disposable cameras is to put them on the tables at the reception. That way the guests can use them while they are waiting for the bridal party to arrive. You get some great pictures and your guests keep themselves entertained.

When I got married i used both a professional photographer and put disposable cameras on the tables at the reception. the professional took the photos at the church and during the wedding. They turned out beautifully while the disposable cameras were used by the guests and they got some awesome shots. If you can afford it I would do both.

Disposable cameras are nice to put on the tables for guest to take pictures, they usually catch some great pictures, but you want to have a professional to take pictures of the wedding party.

I'm having a friend of my mom's take the wedding pictures for us. As he isn't a pro by any means we are also giving disposables to people we know can take good pictures and leaving some on the tables for everyone else.

Only if you don't care about the pictures of your big day. People take shots of whatever they feel like: uncle Frank passed out in the garden, the hot waitress, etc. Additionally, disposable cameras can only do so much in low light or from a distance. You should hire a pro if you want the traditional shots to be captured: kissing the bride, formals and so on. At the very least, ask a friend or family member with a nice camera to document the day for you. It needs to be a specific job for someone or you may miss out on a lot.
