You have price before VAT (y), and you want the price after VAT (x), so multiply the price before VAT by 1.175:
x = 1.175y
Or if your calculator has a % key, type in the price before VAT then + 17.5%.
If on the other hand, what you have is the price with VAT (x), and you want the price before VAT (y), then:
x = 1.175y
y = x ÷ 1.175

times by 7 then divide by 47 and that will give you the vat amount. then deduct this from £250 and thats the price before vat . the amount is £37.23 so price before vat is £212.77. if you want to work out vat on something and you dont have a calculater, say something is £100 + vat , then its 10% of 100= £10 then 5% of 100= £5 then 2.5% of 100= £2.50 add together = £17.50 so total with vat would be £17.50. hope this helps you out. dave

mutliply by .175 or do it quick in your head
eg 17.5% of £40
10% = £4
5% of £40 is your answer for 10% divided by 2 = £2
2.5% of £40 is your answer for 5% divided by 2 = £1
Easy just take your first answer to get 10% divide by 2 then take this answer and divide by 2 again. Add up all 3 and this gives you 17.5%
