Why do some cats have 'baggy belly wings' and not others? I've noticed it more in male cats.

Someone once told me (isn't it funny how you can never remember who it was, but you are positive they were telling the truth) that the excess skin is used to help the cat jump. The flabby bits stretch out as they take their leap. Makes a lot of sense, really.

My 8 year old female cat has this! She's not overweight and is quite active (although she's at the upper end of the normal weight scale!)
The vet said it's just how some cats develop - she lost a lot of weight when she was ill a few months ago and it tightened up - but now she's recovered, it's back again!

My 2 year old male cat is perfectly toned though hehe!

I read somewhere (wish I could remember where) that the extra skin and padding over the abdominal area serves to protect their vital abdominal organs in a fight. If you've ever seen your cats or other cats wrestle, you'll see how they sometimes 'rabbit - kick' at each other's bellies (very gently, or the wrestling will stop when one cat has had too much!). When cats fight for real, they can really dig in to each other's bellies with their back claws.

Both my male and female cat has this 'baggy belly.' I don't know if being fixed and being a senior cat has something to do with it...but they are both fixed and are both seniors.

probably a mixture of things age, how much excerise they get, diet, i suppose the extra skin could come useful if there is ever a sitution where a cat would need a skin graph (ive never heard of that being done but it could happen)

I'm not sure what you mean?

Some male cats get lazy when they are neutered and if not encouraged to excercise can get a little tubby.

It's genetic. It has nothing to do with body weight - even skinny cats can have it. It all depends on if they inherited in from their parents or not.
