Not to long. The only reason it even lasts as long as it does is because they fight once a year and its usually a bum. So they can hold on to the title longer than they should have it.

It would depend on the fighter and how often they defend their belt. Plus what you consider the heavyweight title. If you are talking about a undisputed unified champion, not long because meeting the "mandatory" challengers quickly proves impossible.

now a days, a year if your lucky, yesteryear approximently 3 years. How can any champion hold on to any title with the boxing commissions stripping everybody
