Will the police now apply the law or will they carry on as before.
I suspect they will carry on "not seeing the offenders".

Its true it seems like we see people doing it more than the police. I hope it does make people think a little more as it really does put lives at risk and that is not good. We could never change the police and how they work so no matter what is new and put forward its up to them on the day really. I say spot fine and 6 points. There are enought places to stop and use your phone or get hands free.

As a committed cyclist, and driving on london's roads you would have to say I was mad and should be committed, it's very easy to spot cars where the driver is not really thinking about the job in hand. They drive past a lot closer than cars normally do because the simple fact is they haven't seen me. This is not a problem too much withcars, but when a lorry does it, then it scares the brown stuff out of me. And they won't now if they drive over you.

I think the fine should go up to well over 250 pounds. I can't think of any situation where you are justified to be talking on the phone while driving.

God, I hope so. It drives me crazy when I see all those spoiled stay at home moms driving their luxury SUV's with a load of kids in the back yakking on the cellphone. Unfortunately, it will take a really bad accident to get the attention of the newspapers before Police will enforce this offense. That will last about a month or so and then fade away until the next horrendous accident. I would also love to see the cellphones barred from people crossing the street. It seems that some are in LaLa land when they step out in front of on coming traffic. In addition, ever sit in a Doctors office or on a bus when someone is yakking away in a loud voice. Enough with the cellphones. How did we get along before cellphones?

£60 and three points is laughable, people will still do it. As all mobile phones now supply a hands free system people have no excuse not to use them. The fine should be £1000 and three points with £20 of the fine going to the policeman who catches them. Then the law will be enforced.

It depends entirely how the police feel, there will be more chance of being caught when the weather is fine than when it is bucketing down with rain.
Its called human nature the uniform and status have nothing at all to do with how the the law is enforced, ask an off duty police officer.
(if you dare)

Sadly this is just more government 'spin'. I've seen the police driving behind someone using a phone and do nothing about it. I should think it is low on the list of police priorities after all they have all the valuable politicians lives to protect like,Bliar,Prestcott and the rest.

Yes again the British..."ban everything I don't agree with" attitude wins through. We are such an amazingly intolerant country. Thousands die unnecessarily around the world daily. But who cares about them? No, much easier to complain about a non-problem here at home. But to answer your question. No it won't be and I will still smoke and use the phone in my car.

I can't agree with your assertion "carry on not seeing the offenders" The ploice,as far as i'm aware, take driving while not in full control of their vehicles very seriously. More caught, the better,be safer for us all if they're taken off the road.

Our police are so tied up in red tape and paperwork and trying to meet stupid Government targets back at the station that they won't be on the roads long enough to spot drivers using mobiles.

The new law will be in affect by 2008, everyone will not be allowed to drive while on their cell phones, they will only be able to use their ear piece.
