I don't think this is a serious issue but would like to know how to help my son with his fears. He is 8 and seems to be overly fearful about certain things. He doesn't like to go upstairs by himself. Sometimes he doesn't want to go into the kitchen by himself. He doesn't like going into the garage by himself. When he goes to sleep he cover his head with the blanket even though I tell him not to. Of course I make him do certain things like go to the kitchen by himself. What can I do to help him be less fearful? I'm sure he will outgrow this stuff just don't know when.

The scariest movie he has been allowed to watch is Harry Potter.

He doesn't have many other fears that I am aware of.

His mom is not understanding with this kind of stuff. She would just become irritated with him and start to yell.

is he scared of the dark, or has he seen any scary movies lately? Give him something that makes him feel protected, like a flashlight. Keep letting him know that everything is ok and that he is safe.

Maybe he just needs a bit more "mum time " to help him feel more secure - or go with him rather than giving him opportunity to make it a big thing. Talk to him amd see if you can find out what he is afraid of.

Does he view scary movies?
Has he ever been left alone?....(not necessarily by you)...ask him

We all have our fears and he should be ok in time.

EDIT:
Do you show fear in front of him?
If his protector shows fear....than can make him feel unsafe.

Good Lord!!
She yells instead of hugging?.....he'll always remember when he needed Mommy.....she got mad. Not cool.

how about find out why he's fearful. ask are you scared of the monsters? are you scared of the door not being locked? are you scared of .............ask a million questions and make it silly then tell him you'll put up a trap and see if you catch anything or something dumb. you have to find out what he's scared for and then do something assuring to HIM to solve it.

Maybe there is something else to it. Is he less fearful during the day?
Does he have any other odd behavior?

Just stick with it, but don't push and be supportive.
