Convention, dating back to horse and buggy days. Great Britain and Japan drive on the left; almost all other countries drive on the right.

who knows, its one of lifes mysteries, i can tell you this though in the 1960/70's Sweeden changed reversed the road driving system, from the left to the right (or vice versa), it all happened on one particular day, it must have been mad to get used to it, check out this link !! you'll be so glad you dont live in sweeden apperently most of the country drives on one side yet in some remote towns they still use the other! i wonder how they tell the difference when its time to change?

They do everything backwards, or is it us, but the steering wheels are towards the center.
