Most older people often find themselves alone and scared. I would buy her a nice card that offers encouragment, I dont know hw close or far you live from her put maybe in the card you can make a certificate and stick in the card, saying this entitles you to a day of rest and recuperation. Something saying that when she gets out of the hospital you will spend the day with her and take care of her for the day. Go to the store, clean the house,, a little laundry. Just anything that gives her something to look forward to. Maybe a promise to lunch and a movie? I hope you friend is okay

i have been in many surgeries and know what is like. a card sayin that you will remember that person during and after surgery is good. or you can get her something she doesn't have but wants (not big cuz that would be a pain in the hospital) a stuffed animal is a good one. I went into a surgery like 10 years ago and i just recently got rid of the stuffed animal i had gotten. If you doing something special , that will be remembered, i still remember almost every surgery i had, and the people who sent me cards and stuff. an emblem of something that she likes is also good.
Tell your friend that I send encouragment, even though i dont know her. surgeries can be scary, and hospitals are not the greatest places. _-JK-_

A personalized fleece blanket. Go to Things Remembered (or some such store that does things like that) and have her name or favourite quote stitched onto a small throw fleece. That way, it will not be all about the surgery, she can use it for a long time, it won't die like flowers or upset her stomach like chocolate.
Another suggestion: if she will be recuperating for a while, offer to bring dinner over a couple nights a week so she doesn't have to strain herself cooking. Or, buy her a new book or a gift card to Barnes and Noble (that can be used to order online so she won't have to go to the store) so she can get something to read while in bed.

I say a flower. Or a candle. Or a pretty trincate (if I spelled it correctly). Something you can find at Hallmark or Carlton cards...Its real sweet of you. Everything will be alright

This is going to sound funny, but socks! Nice warm, soft, cheery socks. Older people often get cold easy and hospital "clothes" are not exactly comfy clothes. She'll be able to use them at home, too.

Get her a teddy bear or stuffed animal. It may seem silly, but when everyone is gone, she might find a bit of comfort in it.
