My right leg gives me alot of problems and I have problems walking due to it. I have noticed that it is larger in size (not length) than my left leg. Is that normal? I know that sometimes when limbs are used more they can be larger but I can barely walk on my right leg so it is nursed alot.

I am at high risk for blood clots and my doctor monitors me by measuring both legs... I would see a doctor just to be safe.

How aobut if we say that it isn't always ABNORMAL.

Some people, in addition to being right or left handed are either right-or-left legged as well, in that they always take the first step up stairs with one leg or the other, and that they always jump using that leg and not the other, which means that the muscles are toned more greatly on that leg than the other.

An orthopedist might consider THAT to be normal.

Some peple, like me, have had so many surgeries on one leg that we can no longer use that leg like the other leg, so, we, too, have a similar condition, and while that isn't all that normal, it isn't abnormal enough for me to go in for a knee replacement quite yet.

In addition, if you are overweight, it could be that your body has decided to build more lipid tissue in one leg than in the other.

And there are a wide variety of other reasons why one leg can be larger around than the other.

I would like to echo the suggestion of my fellow bloggers that you consult an MD for this. An orthopedist would be best equipped to give you the answers you need.

Absolutely yes. Just as it is for one arm or one breast to be bigger than the other. However, with your description it seems that if y ou are using it less it is not muscle mass that makes it bigger. I would wonder if it is swollen. Perhaps from it not being exercised as much the blood return isn't as good and the fluid tends to stay in your tissues, making it larger, swollen. If you press against the bone that is on the front of your leg, press toward the lower end of the lower part of your leg, and your fingertips leave an indentation there after you take them away, this is called pitting edema and should be reported to a doctor. Good luck.

I had surgery on my right knee a while ago. After the surgery I was in a lot of pain and unintentionally favored my right leg by using my left leg more (especially going up and down stairs, sitting and getting up, etc.). After months of this, my left leg was had grown to nearly twice the circumference of my right leg. Even when the pain went away, and started using my right leg regularly, my right leg was still way smaller. I really had to concentract to use my legs equally. Sometimes I would intentionally favor my left leg and force my right leg to do more work. Now years later, my right leg is more in proportion to the left, but it's still not the same as my left.
