Most people, whether Christian or not, believe that the historical Jesus existed. Those who think he is a complete fiction are a minority. The dispute is mostly about who or what people believe Jesus to be. Christians believe that he was divine, and that he was physically resurrected and carried off bodily to heaven. Most atheists would believe that the man Jesus lived, died, and was buried like everyone else. So if the tomb of Jesus has been found, with the body of Jesus in it, then this confirms what most atheists believe and disproves one of the central tenets of Christianity, the physical resurrection of Jesus.
But basically there is no way to prove the exact identity of a 2,000 year old body, even if it bore the same very common name as the Christian savior in life. Hope this helps.

This has been on here multiple times today. I mostly see Christians asking and answering these questions in a way that implies they are a little freaked out. Most atheists have been open to the idea that a person such a Jesus existed just not that he was a divine son of God nor that the things depicted in the Bible literally happened. Also, most of the atheists I have seen on here have been withholding judgement on whether they believe they found the bones of Jesus. For them there is no real stake, so what if its true and so what if it is not. If its true many Christians will find a way to ignore reality and if it is not it doesn't mean anything to anyone.
Someone pass the bottle my way---oh, if only that were truly possible!

I think that they would believe anything to justify there cause.
It has already been proven that the tomb is not Jesus of Nazareths - like 20 years ago. Besides Christians believe the Bible. Honestly though what do a bunch of bones have to do with the power of God to resurrect Jesus. He could have been resurrected and made whole without a bunch of bones. God has that power ya know. God made Adam out of dust. You don't think he could resurrect Jesus and leave his bones? Why do people limit God and his ability. I have read that "now that Jesus' bones are found- Christianity is over". If a bunch of bones turns you away from Christ then you don't get the whole thing in the first place.

As an atheist, I believe that a person named Jesus Christ existed. I even believe he was likely a great person, but I do not believe he was a god or the son of a god.
Having said that, I do not believe the bones are that of Jesus Christ because I have not seen any scientific facts to back that up (at least not yet). But I am open to it being possible because if Jesus existed (which I agree he likely did exist as a human being only), his remains are somewhere. Christians deny even the possibility because it goes against everything their religion says including that Jesus rose from the dead.

First there is not enough information released yet for anyone to really believe these are what they are claimed to be. And James Cameron has proven himself unreliable. Christians believe that Christ rose from the dead, lived on earth for 50 days, and then ascended body and soul to heaven where He lives until His return. He did not leave a body behind to be found in a tomb.
Some atheists, as well as most Jews and Muslims acknowledge the existance of Christ. They dispute His being Gods Son and His resurrection and ascension. Some view Him as a wise prophet. Other atheists will grasp at anything and cheer if they think it refutes the Christian faith.
Give it time to be analyzed. Let the full facts be revealed, then decide for yourself.

The true atheists can't believe, because the bones of Christ must have disintegrated and dispersed.
The Christians can't believe, because the body of Christ already soared up with His Spirit.
After all, what is the use of talking about His bones? The important thing is His divine counsels in the Bible which provide the world with millions of saintly personalities who really beautify this lifeless globe.

Well, I think it is probable that a rabbi named Yeshua lived in the first century. He may have even been called the Christ by some of his followers, and it's possible that he was put to death by the Romans (loads of rabble-rousers were). I don't think that such a man was a demigod, though.
I also doubt the accuracy of these archaeological findings. From what I've been reading, they are basing the idea that this is the tomb of the Bible's Yeshua upon a tomb found a long time ago purported to contain James. That tomb was found to be fraudulent. It's fascinating that such a tomb was found, but it's entirely too early to decide if this tomb holds the rabbi Yeshua upon which the New Testament is based.

Nonsense. Atheists have no idea whose bones those are. Relative to his existence, there are indications that at least one "Jesus" lived in the period in question. If credible evidence were to confirm that existence, atheists would have no problem with it at all - whether those were his bones or not.
What there has never been any evidence for is the divinity of Jesus.

We don't believe that these are the bones of the mythical jesus. We believe that these are the bones of a man named yesuah who died in the 1st century. Of course that name was as common as the name John is nowadays. So it's an exciting find as far as archaeology and anthropology goes, but the only person playing up the mythology is the one person who stands to make a fortune off of it; James Cameron.
And I for one hope he makes billions from the gullible sheep.

I haven't seen any atheists who've said that there was any proof of this being the bones of Jesus (drinking).. what I've seen (and agree with) are statements like " let's wait and see what the movie is all about first".. which is typical of those who are following the evidence.
Christians have flat out denied it without even looking at the film because they claim Jesus resurrected and his body was never found.
