I have the same problem. I am now using Paul Mitchell "Tea Tree" shampoo and it seems to be working well. I only condition the length of the hair, not the scalp.
I never heard about the baby powder thing and I am glad..it sounds awfull.
Good luck!

I have extremely oily hair as well. Try to keep your hands off your hair and scalp this agitates the oil glands. Also, on weekends that you are not doing anything let the hair washing go. When you wash it it strips oils and this tells your scalp to produce more, so by not washing it for a day or so, it kind of sends a message to the oil glands not to produce so much. This is not an immediate cure, but it will eventually buy you an extra day.
Oliva J and Geenie are also correct.
Do not use baby powder though, it tends to clog your pores.
