Retrievers have energy, but not HYPER energy...as in they run, they don't bounce. They are also really tolerant and take alot of the crap hyper dogs and kids spew out for them.

I would get a beagle. They are such great dogs...good amount of energy but not crazy. Very cute and loyal. They are stubborn but if you can handle a jrt than you should be fine and they are very tolerant around children. I grew up with beagles now I have a 11 month old Jack Russell. Haha i def. know what you mean when you say they wear you out lol....they never stop!!! My jrt loves to play with beagles. Good luck and have fun with ur jrt!!!

A yorkshire terrier or a shih tzu. I know of a dog that is all three. He was the runt of the litter but he is healthy, lovable, and only around 10 lbs. He is one of the best behaved dogs I have ever seen. He has short hair so there is no fur problems. If you do not like those two breeds, then I would stick with the toy dog breeds.

I think what you want is a dog that is not as high strung as a JRT are known to be. Maybe look into another type of Terriers a Wheaton comes to mind. But make sure you do your self a favor don't get another dog w/ as much energy, that could lead to a mess.

if that is all the hyper that you need in your house now than don't get another dog. i know from experiance that they wont get any calmer. they just want you even more because they get jelous very easily. please just focus on your one dog now and give all the attention and activity that your jack russell needs.

A boston terrier, I have one that tires out my American Bulldog, he runs circles around him, they tire each other out playing during the day and crash out in their crates after play time is finished.
