Usually cake kits will tell you what size pan to use. Or, sometimes they'll give you two or three sizes to choose from. I would just go with an 8 x 8 or 9 x 13. Those are both good sizes for the average cake.

Get a boxed cake and make at home they sell the disposalble pans in the same aisle for you to use. Look on the back of the box to see what size pans you'll need.
If not just buy a sheet cake from the grocery store, that would be fine also.

Most box cake mixes are for 2 9"rounds, or 9x12 rectangle. For an average size group, which I am not sure what your average is, one cake is enough. I would personally go with the 9x12, because it is easier to slice into the # you need.
