I'd recommend you consider some health insurance that's specifically for those travelling abroad.
The exact type would depend on how long you plan to stay and whether or not you're planning to engage in extreme sports (there's actually a plan specifically for that.) As someone else said, you have to be careful about getting that type of insurance, though, since providers in a foreign country don't necessarily accept insurance (period), or they may not accept the particular form you've purchased.
That's why I recommend products from the International Medical Group, underwritten by Sirius International (based out of Sweden.) This plan does not limit you to networks (although they do have networks available), or participating providers and it's designed to provide coverage world-wide (as an indemnity, meaning that they pay directly the the policy owner based on reasonable and customary charges for the area in which you received medical treatment.) Claims assistance is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with multi-lingual representatives and are typically settled within 30 days.
You can also add supplemental life insurance on to this coverage and some plans even allow for an "acts of terrorism" rider, which you may want to consider. (Most medical insurance plans deny coverage for injuries as a result of an act of terrorism.)

yes you definitely need a very good and comprehensive health insurance that provides for both outpatient and inpatient care, for repatriation should you become very seriously ill and for repatriation of your body should you die from any cause.
Now don't get me wrong Thailand has excellent private hospitals that can meet and beat the standards of health care anywhere in the world, but should you become ill or have an accident anywhere in this region you may need to be hospitalised and even though it is inexpensive by Western standards the costs can soon increase.
Try to get an insurance from a reputable and reliable insurer and one that settles at the time the bill is presented not one that you have to settle first and then reclaim after your return home.

If you mean health insurance, check with your carrier. Many companies will offer coverage but you must pay up front and submit for reimbursment upon return home. Check with BUPA as they are one of the larger companies doing business in Thailand. It is not a required item but it never hurts to have it.

I'd take out plenty of life insurance before going anywhere out of the US. -Or whatever your home country is. Medical insurance isn't going to do you much good if you get hurt or sick and there's nobody there who accepts your particular insurance plan! If it's for your peace of mind, you might find accident insurance locally. You'd want to check with the embassy or someone who knows what's available for visiting aliens, before you get there. And while there, always remember that you ARE an alien in their country. Don't expect everything there to be up to our standards. Anything that can possibly wait till you get home, you'd be far better doing that. The care you get isn't going to be anywhere like what you are used to.
