You don't need complicated mixing hardware or anything to do this. Just a microphone or a USB Microphone should do the trick. If you are looking to spend money and plan on doing this frequently I have found that Castblaster. It costs $50 but you get free updates for life. It will also auto publish your creations to podshow or an FTP server if you desire. It will basically save your creation as an MP3 and you can use any CD burning program to burn that onto a CD. It's pretty cool drag and drop your audio clips adjust the levels. You can setup the software to auto fade when you talk over it and so forth.

There is a free utility that works somewhat okay though it's a bit more complicated. Called Audacity that you can record and mix and export as WAV or MP3 and then burn to a CD. But it's not nearly as simple.

One fellow suggested Garageband and that is for Mac OS X only. I see you posted that you use Windows XP.

Best of luck. Feel free to contact me if you would like any assistance with either software.

You need software at a minimum and some kind of mixing hardware if you don't want to end up swapping out cables to switch between microphone and music (external to the computer).

I use Cakewalk Home version

There are others, like Cool Edit Pro, Garage Band, and lots of other professional recording softwares.

I heard about a few free-ware programs just recently. Maybe some other answer-ers can give some names.

Yes, you need software. I use Roxio EZ CD Creator.
It lets you mix sounds, talk over music and you control the sound levels etc.
