Well, the argument seems to be more about probabilities which is not what we think of as traditional empirical science.
The sciences have cultural prestige, less than a generation ago, but prestige still. Art practices play into scientific language with notions of "series" and "experimentation." They are attempting to borrow cultural authority. Then again, many scientists tend to manner themselves as artists or philosophers when the are not.
