"Bright red" around a wound indicates Cellulitis which is infection. That much of a spot (the size of a soda can) tells me that your measures are not working. That redness should be decreasing in size.

The original problem could have been an insect bite or an ingrown hair, but with Cellulitis of this sort you need a professional evaluation and probably antibiotics. Go to your doctor.

Oh, it definitely sounds like you have an infection. If there is redness, it feels hot to the touch, is sore, and is getting bigger, then I suggest you get to the doc before the infection gets into your blood stream. You definitely need antibiotics and if it gets any worse, you may need IV antibiotics. I don't mean to scare you, certainly, but you don't want to mess around with an infection.

Sometimes, the body just can't fight off infections, particularly bacteria. Viruses can be swept away easier by the immune system--they exist on the outside of cells. Bacteria exist inside cells so are kind of hidden from the reach of the immune system.

Yeah, could be MRSA. You probably need antibiotics. Sometimes they'll lance something like that, but you need to go get checked. Good luck
