Zoe I know everyone else has told you how to keep it clean but I'm concerned about the type of jewelry you have in your nose--is it gold or silver or stainless steel? and do you have anyother piercings with the same type of metal?
It is not uncommon to be "allergic" to the metal, I can only wear gold even years after my piercings healed because I'm allergic to stainless steel posts.
I would like to suggest to you that if you do the correct cleaning as the people above described and it STILL is as red and swollen PLEASE go to the ER. There are many, many blood vessels in your nose, as you well know if you ever had a nose bleed, an infection can easily get into your blood stream and that is not good. I would tell you to go back to where you had it pierced but it sounds like a friend did it since you said it was pierced with a needle---which I hope was properly sterilized.. It's your FACE dear, so if it is not getting better quick but getting redder- get to the ER

Nose piercings
Nasal piercing is popular throughout the world and has been throughout history. All the usual rules of aftercare apply, including:
Clean the piercing and jewelry twice daily using a cotton swab, gauze pad or other disposable product and a mild anti-bacterial soap
Do not touch or play with the jewelry. It will damage the tissue and delay healing.
Salt soaks can help promote healing and reduce swelling in the early days.
Ibuprofen will help reduce pain and swelling if needed.
Ice and cold compresses can help reduce swelling if needed.
Pat- don't rub- your face dry to avoid catching and pulling on the piercing jewelry.
Do not remove the jewelry for more than a day at a time, and not at all until it is fully healed.

First of all, don't touch it unless you're cleaning it. That's the easiest way to get an infection.
However, the best way to get your nose pierced (to avoid infection) is to start with a ring. So hopefully that's what you have. With a stud in a fresh piercing, you cannot clean around it and have a higher possibility of infection.
If your nose IS infected, it should be obvious -- swollen, painful, puffy and red.
However, here is the best way to clean your new piercing if it IS a stud:
Wash your hands with antibacterial, fragrance free soap. Gently remove the crust around your jewelry with a disposable cotton ball or Q-Tip. Place antibacterial sap on your hands and rub them togther to create a nice lather. Gently wipe the jewelry and your piercing with the tips of your fingers, careful not to scratch or irritate the area. Once the jewelry and piercing are lathered with soap, spin the jewelry so that some soap runs into the wound, helping to ward off bacteria. After spinning the jewelry several times, rinse the area and the jewelry thoroughly while continuing to spin the jewelry back & forth.

i got one a year ago and i have to take it off (remove ring) within 3 mts. i developed a bump that wouldn't go away. it was swollen all the time and sometimes red. i got all this stuff and bought the cleaning soap they recommended. still i had to remove it. don't wash it so much and don 't touch it much. it is healing and the swelling is from too much contact. your body is forming the hole which is the pierce. give it time. i personally would never do it again. i was worried sick i would lose my nose!

Clean it with a product called bio septic and a cotton ball you can find them both at the pharmacy. If your nose ring is not gold you could be allergic to the metal. You can put ice on it to reduce swelling. good luck

Who said to use warm water and salt??????????
You should be using rubbing acholoc (sp?) but I used bacteine when I got my nose done and it was wayyy better. You need to clean it every 2 hrs w/bactenie and do it for about 4 weeks.
